I spent this summer interning at the Grand Rapids Press in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 100,000+ daily paper has a relatively large coverage area, so I did my share of driving, to the tune of 5,000 miles in just over ten weeks
“With only a few days left of shooting, the field school is basically over at this point. As I sit down and begin edit everything, it’s only looking back that this crazy experience from these past three weeks in Scotland hits me.” – Ross Brinkerhoff
Unable to journey to Scotland for the field school, Matthew Craig talks about his summer experience with back problems that he believes are a result of years carrying heavy camera equipment while working for daily papers. “In the long run though I know my decision to stay here was the right one. It was a difficult and emotional one but I now know I couldn’t have been able to keep up.”
“Leaving Scotland will not be an easy thing to do. I have met so many amazing people here and am having the time of my life. This is definitely not a vacation and there are stressful days where nothing seems to be going your way, but it’s all part of the learning experience. I know I will leave this country a much better shooter and will never forget my month in Scotland.”
Incoming freshman Ian Bates just spent some time in Nova Scotia, traveling and photographing everything he saw. “Jumping into a completely different and unknown place really made me think more. Nova Scotia really helped me break out from the ‘norm’ of my photography.”
“It’s a scary thought that we have only 17 days left in the field school. I’ve always heard that the majority of the work we do as photojournalists is research, and I’ve experienced that back in Athens. And oftentimes, it’s not until your fourth idea conspires that something actually falls into place.”
“The architecture was the first thing that impacted me, as I took the bus from the Edinburgh Airport to Waverley railway station. After what seemed like days of travelling, it was refreshing to see something grounded, something established.”
Kyle Grantham, a recent graduate of Ohio, is in Sacramento interning for the Sacramento Bee. Kyle is working with multiple Pulitzer Prize winners and an inspiring group of photographers that push Kyle to new levels of his photography. Anyone who’s ready to push themselves working for a major daily metro paper should follow Kyle and aspire to get similar internships in the future.
Halie Cousineau is a third year photojournalism student with a love for environmental photography. Currently, Halie and her peers in the VisCom Scotland Field School have begun their independent documentary projects. With freedom to roam anywhere in Scotland and cover any subject, Halie tells us about the start of her documentary project.
Erin Corneliussen is another VisCom Photojournalist currently in Scotland. The class is finalizing plans for their big projects, the documentary and three small, and making travel plans. The feedback from professors and students on the trip are helping to push everyone to make the best pictures they can.
